Captain Joe and the Ferocious Storm

SWISH! SWISH! As you can hear the waves crash. There was a ship in the middle of the Caribbean sea. On board that ship was the amazing Captain Joe, who was sent from the people of Cuba to go trade with the mysterious people of Jamaica. This trip to Jamaica and back would take him about 2 weeks. 1 week to Jamaica. 1 week back. By now, Captain Joe has already embarked on this long journey, as it is the 3rd day of this trip. As the sun was setting, Captain Joe saw something worrisome. There were dark rainy clouds ahead, and he knew what was coming next.

The next day arrived, and as expected rain was pouring down on captain Joe and his ship. Then, in the middle of the day, something unexpected happened. At the bottom of his ship, there was a hole and the ship was slowly sinking. With Captain Joe's fast reflexes, he looks at his map and finds an island nearby. He then gathers all of his food, water, and a map. Without hesitation he jumps into the water as the waves get bigger. Rain was pouring down on him, and he knew he would not survive out here if he didn’t get to shore quickly. He swam with all his might, carrying all of his resources on his back. Fortunately for him, the currents were going in the direction of the island, so he was swimming with no rip currents pulling him back. Finally, after an eternity of swimming, captain Joe made it onto the island.

When he arrived at the island, captain Joe was so tired that he immediately fell asleep right there on the beach. It wasn’t long after that he woke up, and realized that he had fully dried up. As soon as Captain Joe arrived on this island, the sun came out and it was hotter than ever. This was the hottest temperature that captain Joe has ever experienced. He knew he had to build his shelter because  he knew he was not building a boat to escape here anytime soon. Building a new boat can take as short as 2 days, or as long as 2 weeks! He gathered his resources and realized most of his food and his map is fully wet. He would need to find some water on this island if he wanted to drink unsalted water. On the boat, he didn’t have a care in the world of how much things he used, and now he has no resources to use.  He had to make an escape boat quickly or else his careless mistake might cost him a fortune.

First, he ate some of the last of his food, because he was STARVING. He had some beef jerky and that was about it. He had to conserve it as he learned from his mistake earlier. He can not run out of jerky or else he is going to have to hunt for food. He had no weapons, tools, or the knowledge on how to build them, but he was going to have to try to build one because of the situation. Because of the storm, there were lots of fallen trees which was convenient for Captain Joe as he had no tools available. He gathered some branches and found that some of them were sharp, while others were thick. He knew he had to make shelter or else tonight is going to be tragic.

He gathered up all the thick sticks that he could use to build a shelter with shade. He gathered some branches and started to make a teepee. With a teepee, he can set up shade. Once he set up shade on this blazing island, he got to work. He had to collect resources to make a raft that he could take back to the mainland. He then checked his map, and if he was correct, he is not that far away. Maybe like 3 miles away from the mainland. He had to build a raft and an oar that could safely direct him back to the mainland. His energy was basically drenched at this point, so first he had to find some food. In order to cook food, Captain Joe needs a fire.

He gathered some fire wood and found some tinder on the ground. Tinder is used for burning the fire and is what makes it last longer. He than found two sticks and started to apply pressure so heat and smoke starts fuming, and overtime a fire STARTS. Captain Joe has never been more proud of himself, but the job wasn’t done. He had to go catch some fish. He got some wire he found on the deserted island and made a fishing rod. He was sitting in the blazing sun for more than 2 hours but finally he felt something. HE CAUGHT FISH! A BIG YELLOWTAIL FISH! He immediately went and put it on the fire to cook. It was basically dark out, but Captain Joe has never seen such amazing fish before in his life.

The next few days went by, and captain Joe had no luck. He kept trying everyday to find more fish, but nothing was found. He is trying to find one glimpse of luck but luck ran out. He had to gather all the materials to build his oar and raft quickly or else Captain Joe does not know how much longer he can survive on this island.

He went to the other side of the island, as that side had lots of fallen trees from the storm. While he was gathering pieces of wood, he saw something in the sky that was disrupting him. There was cloudy skies ahead, so he knew wave 2 of the storm was upon. He quickly collected all the wood he needed and started to tie them together. It didn’t matter how tired the captain was as he knew if he did not finish this raft in time, he would not survive.

The storm was coming, but captain joe has finished tightening the last parts and the raft was complete. This may seem good but Captain Joe still had to shape out an oar without any tools. He grabbed a piece of wood that looked big enough to make an oar. And he started to break the wood apart by slamming it on the ground, and using rocks to break it apart. The rocks helped shape out the oar but right as he was almost done, rain started to pour down on him. The first few drops of rain on this island amazed him as the island was blazing hot for the entire time. Then small droplets of rain turned to hard bricks that was raining down on him hard and fast. He had to finish shaping the oar quick or else everything was going to get wet.

The block of wood was almost fully shaped as captain Joe’s hands were all cut up. A couple minutes later than went by and the oar was finally shaped. Captain joe soon was about to run out of water and food, so he had some bits of his last food, put the raft in the ocean, sat onto the raft, and he was off. Captain Joe was sailing to the nearest island in the hardest storm that he has faced. The waves in the middle of the ocean was supposed to get worse based on his understanding. He was paddling as hard as he could until a wave nearly knocked him over.

`A huge wave came crashing onto his raft, but Captain Joe got up and continued to paddle. He was about 1 mile in, and has 2 miles left to go. This second mile is supposed to be the hardest stretch so he has to focus and try to work around the waves. The waves got more bumpy, as he was trying to stay afloat. At this point, his entire body was drenched as harder rain was pouring down on him. (not done yet)
